Word of the Year

 Word of the Year

Germinate - Ideas or feelings to develop.

Happy Sunday! I wanted to share an eclectic mix of happenings.

Every year I like to pick a word. Last year’s word was expand, and to be honest, the fruits of that word are probably going to show up more fully this year.

How so? This year I know my students better, we had our first art show at school, and we’re already working on another one—our first-ever “glow” show, which should be super fun. For those who don’t know, a glow show is when you make art with neon colors so the work glows under black lights.  Showing your work, whether for students or anyone, brings a nice pressure.  Students have been more focused and want to make good work, a plus for all.

Jules and I also found a plein air group last year, and I’m already excited to paint with them again this summer. I'm helping the Urban Sketching group.  We’ve applied for the studio tour again, and we’re going to participate in the Art Fields plein air competition.  So, expanding into the art community.

So yes, expansion is still happening. However, as with every season—and like plants themselves—for growth to occur, there also needs to be a season of germination and hibernation. A time to curl up, think about what’s next, and evaluate what’s still bringing us joy.

Here are a few things bringing joy right now:

🎵 Music – Flora Bowley is an Oregon-based artist I’ve followed for years. She shares beautiful playlists, and if you’d like to check one out, here’s a link: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1gDVu2Yu8mYoZfjM7FNBLh?si=8030670c49224886

🎨Art Journal and playing with new techniques:

Colored mechanical pencil
Watercolor and oil pastel - I'm able to go in and scratch the surface of the
oil pastel to give more texture, fun!

watercolor and playing with a gold pen.

📖 Books I'm reading right now:
This book is incredible, it's a non-fiction book about Matisse's early years. I cannot imagine the detective work that Hilary Spurling used to piece this together, it's not only about Matisse but his circle of friends, family, education, and places that he painted.  It's such an interesting glimpse into that time period and gives you such a wonderful peek into how the impressionist movement began.  I've added many places to my list of locations to visit.
Another artist book - this one about all of the bears that Susan Seddon Boulet included in her beautiful artwork.  Her paintings are so inspirational!  Wow!  Her technique is what I started to explore above and hope to continue.

🎧 Audiobook - If you're more into listening to books, I just finished listening to The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak.  Thanks Doug, Catherine said you recommended it.  I love that a tree is one of the narrator/characters but my favorite character was Meryem.  If you listen, you'll have to tell me if you agree.

All right everyone, as we all know the world continues to be a crazy place; therefore, you might want to germinate too. LOL.  I think of you all often.  Please share any great playlists or listening options, I love listening to new things.  Cheers, Eileen
