Happy Monday and Happy Labor Day!
Isn’t it the best having an extra day off? I’m soaking it up. The weather here has been such a treat—cool and pleasant, which is almost unheard of this time of year. I’ll take it!
We’ve been back in school for three weeks already, and I’ve already battled (and thankfully beaten) my first cold. My schedule feels so much better this year compared to last. Mondays used to be a beast, but now things are more balanced, and since I know the students better, it all feels smoother. There’s still plenty to do, but now I know what to expect and how to prep—it makes a world of difference.
A few fun things I did to kick off the year:
-
I melted down all the broken crayons to make new chunky ones. The kids think they’re magic! I especially love using them with my kindergartners and texture plates—they’re perfect for little hands.
-
I scored a new “wheely bag” at the thrift store this summer for just $10. A backpack on wheels—game changer! Highly recommend. Jules and I love going to the Goodwill in Jupiter, Florida—it’s like a honey hole of treasures. We always find the best stuff, and it’s where I picked up a couple of new clothing items for back-to-school. There’s just something about this season that makes you crave a few fresh things, even as adults.
-
Last year, I tried putting bright-colored tape on the tables, but little hands like to peel. So this year, I painted the edges instead. It’s cheerful and practical. Forgot to take a pic of those but you can see how my door is decorated and my "goals" that we say at the beginning of each class.

And this one might be my favorite: I bought those booties you wear over your shoes, and I use them to “mop” the floor after paint projects. I get them a bit damp and skate around the room cleaning up. It looks silly, but it works so well—and it’s way more fun than dragging out a mop. Honestly, I think we could all use more playful moments like that. We take ourselves too seriously too much of the time.
One great art thing has happened since school started. I donated a painting to the South Carolina Wildlife Foundation for an online auction and the person who bought my painting sent me the sweetest text! So, how great is that. Here's my painting in the real world.I'm wishing you all the best, where ever you are I hope this inspires you to create as many happy moments as you can.
Cheers everyone!
