Learning about Composition

Composition with Middle School Students

Composition is one of those fundamental ideas that never gets tiring.  It's so fun to move things around the page and see what turns up, what is pleasing, surprising, and just getting your brain to quickly realize what looks good.  In this exercise, I take lots of clippings and put them into box lids at each table and students work with the pieces to create their own composition.  Some added their own drawings, others stick with the images alone.  Again, all is good we are just learning what happens and what makes a pleasing composition.  I give the following instruction first and then they work on their own.
